Leaders from various corners of the hospitality industry came together last week with a few of Cornell University students to participate in a Sustainability Roundtable at the Cornell Center for Hospitality Research. Our representative, Lina Serpil, sent us three of the top tips she gathered from the sessions to pass on to our hotel followers who are managing their sustainability:

- Do make an effort to provide sustainable hotel services, and tell your guests about them so that they are aware of your efforts to be sustainable.

- Make sure your guests don’t feel under-served when cutting out amenities when you’re an “eco-friendly” hotel, when they are paying the same price. Examples may be: keeping heat/cool settings on while outside of the room to ensure you are comfortable upon your return, drinking water out of a pitcher to save from needing individual water bottles in rooms, reusing towels, gaining more loyalty points for NOT having housekeeping clean your room, etc.

- Roundtable participants agreed that there is a need for an industry standard certification for green hotels. Look out for organizations that can offer your hotel an “eco-certified” label. (Click here to see what we blogged about this last week if you want to hear more)
